An Oath: Operation Vijay and The Kargil

When I read these lines written by Maakhanlal Chaturvedi at the gate of Kargil War Memorial (Dras,India), my Hindi Textbook of third standard flashed in front of my eyes. I didn't know the meaning of this poem then. Obviously what does a 7 year-old understand? But now, when I read it again, it gave me goosebumps.

Kargil, the place is scarred by the wounds of don't know how many souls. It was 3rd of May, 1999 when, local Shepherds of Kargil reported that they saw some Pakistanis in there. The day became the Black day for Kargil as the infiltration of Pakistani troops within the Kargil was a sort of announcement for the War. The wounds of 1971 confrontation war were yet afresh and The Kargil War arrived when 5 Indian soldiers on the patrol were captivated and bled to death.

The Indian Air Force came in play to help to Indian Army and strike against infiltrators was turned on. The MIG-21s and MIG-27s were mainly used in the war, out of which 2 were lost in initial days of the war. The conditions worsened when Pakistan dropped bombs in India and as a result the offensive attacks in Kargil were done by Indian Army. After Indian army took control and was on the winning side, the Pakistan announced to take back their troops after Sharif had his discussion with Mr. Clinton. India captured the key peaks in Batalik. The fight ended on 14th of July. "Operation Vijay", which was launched to win the Kargil fight, was declared as a success by Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee the then Prime Minister. And the total eviction of Pakistanis was done, following which, after the name of the Operation Vijay 26th July, 1999 was celebrated as first "Kargil Vijay Divas".

The official data tells us that 527 soldiers were killed and 1363 were wounded but those were not those 527 soldiers, behind them were 527 families, who are left wounded and the whole nation, who felt that pain. On one side was the happiness for winning over Pakistan but the other side had millions of heartbroken due to the unfathomable loss of our sons, brothers, husbands and fathers. They sacrificed their life for Bharat Mata, for us.

Wounds did heal with time but scars stayed.

And every 26th July, there is this hole in heart which reminds us, their dedication and love for the country.
Kargil was won by them.
And so were our hearts.

And as a tribute to the Kargil Heroes, let's take an oath at this Kargil Vijay Divas, to make this country a peaceful place.
A place like Heaven!
